BIG-HEARTED CAPERS HELP FOOD BANKS IN TRUE COLOURS 2025

Jan. 09, 2026

SOCCER CAPE BRETON'S True Colours initiative to help fight food insecurity on the island was a huge success over the holiday period.

Players throughout the SCB Skill Centre and Minis programs and the CAPERS Academy squads were encouraged to wear their favourite club or international colours to practice for one day only.

The price? A donation of anything they could afford to help those less fortunate than themselves as winter bites.

SCB Admin Assist Lisa Lavery was the driving force behind this year's effort and she said: "The parents and players from all of the programs made an unbelievable effort at a busy time of year and we had a huge amount of food donated.

"Our established partnership is with the Student Union at CBU but in 2025 we were also able to help the Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul which was so heartening."

This was the fourth series of the True Colours food drive since we launched the project in 2022 and it has become a day the players and parents in all programs enjoy.

Regional Director of Soccer Development Iain King said: "We live on an island with a child poverty rate of 32.4% and food insecurity levels run parallel with that.

"This is a cause close to the hearts of everyone in our organisation and True Colours is an initiative that we will look to expand in 2026 because it is needed.

"Our mission is help develop the kids in the programs not just as players but as people and this goes a small way to helping in that aim."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT...our picture shows the CAPERS Academy U13 Boys with some of the donations that helped those in need across the island.
